"Textile Conservation: Advances in Practice" is a remarkable contribution both to the field of textile conservation and to the museum profession as a whole. Editors Frances Lennard and Patricia Ewer address the changing context of textile conservation, technical advances, and future needs and influences through a series of thoughtful introductions and an abundance of case studies. Contributed by more than forty practitioners, the case studies outline the challenges, actions, and outcomes of specific projects, which reveal the range and complexity of actual work in the United Kingdom and the United States. "Textile Conservation" is a history of the discipline (and of textile collecting and museum interpretation!) and a handbook for success in professional practice.
The shifting role and reasons for textile conservation in the heritage sector are shown through the array of objects, requirements, and treatment options explored in the case studies. Likewise, they also demonstrate an increased engagement with communities in which textiles have cultural needs beyond those of traditional museums. Whether responding to public fervor for Grace Kelly's wedding dress, addressing site-specific challenges such as a ceiling banner at the Stibbert Museum, or the need for preventive conservation in Bhutan, the book explores the scope of contemporary textile conservation and presents a range of solutions responding to the concerns of various stakeholders.

A snapshot in time - conservation not only for textile conservators

Despite the title, Textile Conservation - Advances in Practice, this book is not only about textile conservation, but about conservation generally. It is about the changes, opportunities and challenges the profession faces today, for example scientific developments, the need for outreach and communication, new kind of risks with modern materials such as plastics, political and financial restraints, and the old truth worth repeating - prevention is better than cure. However, it is a book not only for conservators or conservation professionals. It ought to be read by politicians and decision makers within the heritage sector. The editors call the book "a snapshot in time", which it is, and so much more.
The book is divided in nine chapters dedicated to presenting and discussing conservation, engaging communities, preventive conservation, scientific developments and the final chapter discussing the future. Each chapter has an informative and thought provoking introduction by the editors. After each chapter follows three or four case studies to illustrate what has previously been presented.
The many case study contributions highlight the importance of a holistic view when dealing with all aspects of conservation, especially the necessity to look up, leave the studio and communicate with different stakeholders. As a non-textile conservator, I was delighted to see that the case studies were about so much more than which dye was used, or which surfactant. It was about why conservation was proposed, who wanted it, what choices lay behind and how conservation was communicated to the public, many looking back historically at previous ways of doing things, but now opting for different methods. One case study, the conservation and replication of miners' union lodge banners from the Durham coalfields, was surprisingly moving, putting the banners in a historic and social context of a way of life forever gone.
In 2009 the Textile Conservation Centre in the UK closed in spite of protests from conservation professionals all over the world (one of the case studies tells the story of its MA Textile Conservation Programme). A wonderful development is that in March 2010, it was announced that textile conservation training in the UK will be reestablished at Glasgow University this very autumn, thus securing post graduate textile conservation training taught in English. The book is dedicated to "the future of textile conservation education", which proved a well-chosen dedication indeed.

Highly recommended new book

Textile Conservation: Advances in Practice is a welcome and some might say overdue addition to the pantheon of literature that exists on the subject. Edited by Frances Lennard and Patricia Ewer the duo have pulled together a wide-ranging group of case histories from the United Kingdom and United States to reflect and illustrate the factors the editors believe have influenced the development the practice of textile conservation over the last forty years.
The pioneers of our profession would have a hard time recognizing our jobs now as changes have been rapid and wide-ranging. In part one entitled `changing context' case histories are used to examine the contemporary approach to how objects are treated and how the role of the textile conservator has changed to fit into today's modern heritage sector. It could be argued that the title `textile conservator' is today very limited as the case histories assert that they are as likely to be found in a project management meeting, volunteer training session or at an airport waiting for loan objects to clear customs as they are to be doing actual bench work.
Another section of `changing context' explores the dialogue that now more frequently takes place between conservators and the communities they serve, whether these are museum visitors, aboriginal communities or families indigenous to a historic home. Case histories include Heald's fascinating insight into the work that takes place at the National Museum of the American Indian and Jordan's review of the intricacies involved in working on large, complex objects at Historic Royal Palaces in full view of the visiting public.
Part two addresses recent technical advances that have been made both in remedial and preventive conservation practice. Many of the case histories contain themes that are examined elsewhere in the book which provides continuity throughout and also lends a nice balance between theory and practice. Whether the reader works in a museum, gallery, historic home, private practice or a combination of all of the above there is useful information to be found here.
As Lynda Hillyer states in the her foreword the book's publication comes at a difficult time for textile conservation at a time of budget cuts, reductions in permanent positions and the closing of many MA programs. The final chapter entitled `the future' explores what is needed to sustain the profession in the long-term. Through its case histories the broadening of conservation boundaries, theoretical, practical and geographical is discussed.
Textile Conservation: advances in practice should be essential reading for all practicing conservators and for those who hope to study textile conservation. There is no `singular' experience to be had in this profession anymore each conservator's job is quite specific depending on where they work, with whom and on what. It has been a long time since there has been a comprehensive review of the state of textile conservation and this publication does a good job at that, not only covering practical developments in treatments and research but also talking about the changing expectations and realities of the day to day life of a textile conservator in the modern heritage field. This book provides a good general guide to where we have been, where we are now and hopefully how the profession will continue to develop long into the future.
