About the Author
Robert Fischer is President of Assets Protection Associates, Inc., a security consulting firm established in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in education administration from Southern Illinois University in 1981. Dr. Fischer has served as a consultant to many organizations, including publishers, private security firms, retailers, and school districts. Dr. Fischer is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society for industrial Security, The Academy if Security Educators and Trainers, and the International Police Association. He recently retired from his positions as the Director of Illinois Law Enforcement Executive Institute, a project of the Illinois Law Enforcement and Standards Board, and as a professor of law enforcement and justice administration at Western Illinois University.

Not obsolete - Newer versions are available though

I disagree with whomever wrote this text was outdated. There are many valuable concepts in this book and I can't think of anything in this book that can't be applied to security today. It may be missing some of the new technologies but everything in it is still current.

It is a good read and well organized. I picked this up for an Intro to Security class in college.

About the Author
After gaining his PhD in 1953, Professor Smallman spent five years at the Atomic Energy Research
Establishment at Harwell before returning to the University of Birmingham, where he became Professor
of Physical Metallurgy in 1964 and Feeney Professor and Head of the Department of Physical
Metallurgy and Science of Materials in 1969. He subsequently became Head of the amalgamated
Department of Metallurgy and Materials (1981), Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and
the first Dean of the newly created Engineering Faculty in 1985. For five years he wasVice-Principal
of the University (1987-92).
He has held visiting professorship appointments at the University of Stanford, Berkeley, Pennsylvania
(USA), New SouthWales (Australia), Hong Kong and Cape Town, and has received Honorary
Doctorates from the University of Novi Sad (Yugoslavia), University ofWales and Cranfield University.
His research work has been recognized by the award of the Sir George Beilby Gold Medal of the
Royal Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Metals (1969), the Rosenhain Medal of the Institute of
Metals for contributions to Physical Metallurgy (1972), the Platinum Medal, the premier medal of
the Institute of Materials (1989), and the Acta Materialia Gold Medal (2004).
Hewas elected a Fellowof the Royal Society (1986), a Fellowof the RoyalAcademy of Engineering
(1990), a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Engineering (2005), and
appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992. A former Council Member of the
Science and Engineering Research Council, he has been Vice-President of the Institute of Materials
and President of the Federated European Materials Societies. Since retirement he has been academic
consultant for a number of institutions both in the UK and overseas.

Professor Ngan obtained his PhD on electron microscopy of intermetallics in 1992 at the University
of Birmingham, under the supervision of Professor Ray Smallman and Professor Ian Jones. He then
carried out postdoctoral research at Oxford University on materials simulations under the supervision
of Professor David Pettifor. In 1993, he returned to the University of Hong Kong as a Lecturer in
Materials Science and Solid Mechanics, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2003,
he became Senior Lecturer and in 2006 Professor. His research interests include dislocation theory,
electron microscopy of materials and, more recently, nanomechanics. He has published over 120
refereed papers, mostly in international journals. He received a number of awards, including the
Williamson Prize (for being the top Engineering student in his undergraduate studies at the University
of Hong Kong), Thomas Turner Research Prize (for the quality of his PhD thesis at the University of
Birmingham), Outstanding Young Researcher Award at the University of Hong Kong, and in 2007
was awarded the Rosenhain Medal of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He also held
visiting professorship appointments at Nanjing University and the Central Iron and Steel Research
Institute in Beijing, and in 2003, he was also awarded the Universitas 21 Fellowship to visit the
University of Auckland. He is active in conference organization and journal editorial work.

Edward Cripe is president of Merit Performance, Inc., based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has 30 years of experience in organization development, training, competency systems, performance management, and management consulting with companies such as ConAgra, American National Can, CIGNA, Ashland Oil, Cable and Wireless, and The Limited. He is co-developer of the REACH (TM) Coaching Performance Excellence Training program and author of articles that have appeared in Training and Development Journal, HR Professional, Corporate University Review, and others.

has more than 20 years of experience in competency-based job analysis, skills assessment, management development, and course development. He has completed major competency assessment and organizational change projects for clients in most industries, including American National Can, Digital Equipment Corporation, EMC Corporation, The Travelers, Blue Cross-Blue Shield, and General Electric. Dr. Mansfield is co-author of The Psychology of Creativity and Discovery and has published numerous articles.

Used it as a textbook - great results

I used this book as a supplemental textbook on leadership development for a master's course I taught overseas. Students loved it because of the clarity and usefulness of the charts in designing training modules, developing surveys, and assessing leadership in their organizations. They liked this book because of it's practicality better than some of the most popular authors on leadership.

A Highly Useful Guide!

The Value-Added Employee contains some excellent tools to help create specific development plans for people at all levels. The book provides the reader with an understanding of "competencies" and job competency models, concepts that have become popular in recent years with many corporations. Thirty-one competencies are featured, organized into three clear groupings: competencies that are related to working with people, business-related competencies and self-management competencies. As a manager, I partcularly appreciated the suggestions on how I can help develop or strengthen the competency for those I coach. This is a practical book, more like a workbook than a traditional book. HR departments will also find it helpful.

"Great job"

This is an outstanding book. It helped me analyze my strengths and the areas I need to work on to get ahead. Most self-help books are too academic or "motivational". This book seems to reflect what real live corporations are looking for. The writers apparently are not egghead psychologists, but are common sense business people who have successfully implemented competency development systems in major companies. The simple, practical tools for self assessment and career planning included in the book are great. I'm surprised that more organizations haven't adopted this approach. Other non-management employees like myself who are trying to better ourselves would certainly appreciate it.

Briefer, but not more concise...

I own every single edition of Clinical Ocular Pharmacology. The first edition of this work did an excellent job in pointing out basic pharmaceutical priniciples to start the work off. The second edtion did this to a lesser extent and subsequent edtions ignored them all together.

Editons three and beyond DID gradually expand specific Ocular treatment plans and disease descriptions more and more.

Then this edtion came along.

Certain drugs, which had been discussed in every single prior edtion were not even mentioned, and the treatment given to diseases and pharmaceuticals alike was abbreviatd.

This was the first edition which in at least some way did not surpass it's predecessor.

An overpriced dissappointment.

An interesting book and at first looks very exciting. But I had trouble finding the answers to the posed questions
Also on page 63 the author describes the "Amp" as a coulomb multiplied by a second when in reality the Amp is a coulomb divided by a second
I am pretty sure that is true and I have not misread the page

I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK BUT SOME THINGS JUST DON'T MAKE SENSE LIKE:
1. THE LAYOUT OF THE ANSWERS BEHIND THE BOOK ARE REALLY CONFUSING AND NOT IN ORDER
2. GRAMMATICAL ERRORS
3. SOME IDEAS ARE NOT EXPRESSED USING THE MOST APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL JARGON

I STILL LIKE THE BOOK AFTER ALL I BOUGHT IT. IT DID HELP IN OPENING MY MIND TO SOME IDEAS, IT HAS LOTS OF EXAMPLES THAT ARE WELL EXPLAINED MOST OF THE TIME AND IS REALLY AND OK INTRODUCTORY TEXT....BUT THE "ANSWERS BEHIND THE BOOK" ISSUE...NOT GONNA FLY WITH ME

About the Author
About the Author Jon Lang, Ph.D., is currently Professor of Architecture at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, as well as Director for Urban Design of the Environmental Research Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lang also taught in the Urban Design program at the University of Pennsylvania from 1970 to 1990, chairing the program during the eighties. He continued his association with Penn as a visiting Professor of City Planning through 1993. Dr. Lang has served as a consultant for UNESCO in Turkey and for the Ford Foundation in India. He is co-editor of the pioneering book Designing for Human Behavior: Architecture and the Behavioral Sciences, as well as author of Creating Architectural Theory: The Role of the Behavioral Sciences in Environmental Design.

Close look at the Moderns

A spectacular book. Lang explains all the design process of the urban environment within USA in this century. What had going wrong and why. See also how a close relationship between designers and its clients can improve design quality and what sort of human needs can be fulfilled by the built environment. A book not only for urban designers but for all people related with the designing process from interiors designers to landscape architects.

Not what it seems...

This is not a comprehensive book on the field of Urban Design. Although this is obvious from the subtitle one is left with dissapointment. Aside from an interesting collection of cases studies you really don't get the complexity and timeless cross-section of this field that is having a renaissance now. None of the current trends are mentioned nor do they get any strong coverage (new urbanism/trasnurbanism/reurbanism/everyday urbanism/splintered urbanism/complexity urbanism) nor does the historical element comes through. Generaly good written book but too much of a sallad bowl without a proper structure and philosophy. Not a good tool for teaching. If you want top of the pops book in this field go to D.Grahame Shane's Recombinant Urbanism. For me it was astonishing how little space was given to new urbanism, the leading urban design theory and practice today.

So good that I intend to recommend it as one of the text books for my classes of Urban Planning. It has a well balanced combination of theory - explained with conceptual diagrams - and case studies, which cover most of the examples of Urban Design in the last and this centuries. The author's review of the Master Plan of Curitiba, that had my participation 40 years ago in research and design, is very to the point when he asks: "How we move ahead?"

About the Author
Previously Director of the Italian RAI-ENAC Type Certification Division 1992-2000. Also a member of the JAA Certification Committee. As a member of the JAR 22 and JAR-VLA Study Groups since the 1970s, he had a key role in the creation and development of such standards.

Dr. De Florio has been a sailplane and aeroplane pilot for over 25 years and currently remains a member of the OSTIV Sailplane Development Panel and Honorary Member of UVS International. In June 2008, he was awarded the 1st UAS Pioneer Award instituted 'to honour and thank individuals for their exceptional and dedicated services to the international UAS community'.

Unfortunately I discovered the book too late

When EASA Part-21 entered into force in my country, I had to qualify the company I was managing then as design organization. Back then, it was really hard to have clearly in mind "how all that work".

I just found about this book. The table of content made me think that this book was just what I needed. When I read it, it definitely enlighten me on details I misunderstood before. Actually, this book properly gives a very good overview from Design, Engineering and Maintenance in aviation.

I'd wish that I discovered this book in 2004!

Great introduction with excellant depth

This book gave a great introduction to practitioners who have traditionally dealt with avionics but is now being required to comply with DO-254 guideline. I've gone through this book and create an internal company training that has been very effective in helping my technical and sales & marketing teams to have a more in-depth knowledge than what can be found in wiki, which BTW is a decent source of high level information. However, if you are looking for specific details on DO-254 or DO-178, then this book may not necessarily provide enough. For DO-254, I would recommend taking a training class with a DER, and for DO-178, I would highly recommend the new book from Leanna Rierson (CRC Press (c) 2013)

The book is excellent. Taking into account that the subject is tough, the author makes it easy to read and to follow. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in airworthiness and certification of aerospace vehicles.
