Good for its intended purpose.

This book is written in a colloquial tone that may be off-putting to some, though amusing at first. It is a reasonably quick read; if your goal is to get a sense of the lay of TEE land and to get your feet wet, this book could serve that purpose. I think it would be difficult to pass the PTEeXAM based solely on this text.

There is one section that this book hits out of the park -- hemodynamic calculations. Concise and easy to understand. Run through those a few times and you'll be able to nail any hemodynamic calculation question asked of you on the boards. Great demonstration of how to use PISA to calculate an EROA, etc.

Summary: not detailed enough to serve as your primary text if you're taking the PTEeXAM. Reasonable introduction to TEE and concepts. Great treatment of hemodynamic calculations.

Excellent book, a study guide that clearly and with humor explains TEE basics. Also points you in the right direction for meetings, comprehensive texts, CD-ROMs etc.

If you are new to echo or are thinking about starting a TEE program buy this book.

The place to start...

It is quite true that this book is not sufficiently comprehensive to give you a thorough & in depth knowledge of TEE; it never claims to do that. As someone who has purchased many, if not most, of the available TEE books, I would recommend Andre Denault's new edition as by far the most comprehensive.

What Chris Gallagher's book does far better than any other is to take someone with no prior knowledge or familiarity with TEE, & give him/her what they need to get started. It is by far the best at taking what could otherwise become an intimidating & daunting task, making it quickly seem attainable, & making it fun along the way.

I never take the time to write reviews, but I hope you find this helpful.

Doug Abbott is the principal of Intellimetrix, a consulting firm in Silver City, NM, specializing in hardware and software for industrial and scientific data acquisition and embedded product applications. Among his past and pre-sent clients are Agilent Technologies, Tektronix, Sandia National Laboratory and numerous smaller high-tech com-panies in Silicon Valley. Mr. Abbott has over thirty years experience in various aspects of computer hardware and software design and has been an independent consultant for the past fifteen years. Prior to founding Intellimetrix, he managed software de-velopment for DSP Technology, Inc, a leading supplier of high-speed instrumentation. Doug is also a popular instructor and seminar leader, who teaches classes in PC technology and real-time program-ming for University of California Berkeley Extension. He has taught the techniques of real-time programming and multi-tasking operating systems to hundreds of professional engineers. These classes can also be customized and made available for on-site presentation. Mr. Abbott received an MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Don't waste your money

This book is VERY light on content (it's a pretty small book, 193 pages for the primary material). If you just look at the table of contents, you can get more depth in a couple hours of googling.

It just isn't a very useful book. It has nothing to offer a programmer with any level of experience with Linux or embedded systems, and it doesn't really educate the guy who's new to those subjects. It's more like a collection of superficial magazine articles.

The amount of real-time covered is really minimal. It touches on defining real-time computing, then has a (short and fairly useless) chapter on RTAI that doesn't do anything.

Go with Yaghmour's "Building Embedded Linux Systems", it's a MUCH better book, and is probably cheaper.

Good Introduction to Embedded Linux

This book is easy to read, and a good place to *START* for Embedded Linux. The organization of the chapters probably makes more sense once you're done reading it. It contains an excellent introduction to RTOS, multi-tasking, and relevant Linux programming concepts. The book is not intended as a complete guide to Embedded Linux or Real-Time issues, but rather helps the reader get started with an example using inexpensive hardware to drive a real embedded application. Important Embedded Linux concepts are covered including (remote) debugging, kernel modules, device drivers, and the available extensions to Linux for enabling an embedded and soft/firm real-time environment. Linux is not ready for hard real-time applications, but it's on the radar (which is why WindRiver is starting to support Linux based tools). I think this is a good first book for Embedded Linux in order to avoid getting lost in the wealth of other information available. I think I would like to see more/some real-world architectural based examples added to the book/CD. The book is not filled with useless pages of source code listings. If this book were to try and cover all real-time and Embedded Linux concepts and issues, it would be 1000 pages! A good book to start with!

No Depth

I bought this book hoping for an in depth look at using Linux for real-time. The table of contents would lead you to believe that this is the case.
Instead I found that it covered this topic only at a very high level. It might be good for an introduction to this topic, but there is very little depth here. For example, the chapter on Linux and Real-time is only 5 pages long! While the description of configuring BlueCat Linux (seems pretty off-topic to me) is 14 pages.
Unless you're a newbie to this topic, don't bother.

About the Author
Martin van Staveren works for 15 years at GeoDelft, since 2001 as director of the GeoLab department. GeoDelft is the National Institute for Geo-Engineering in The Netherlands and combines applied research and development with specialist consultancy in the field of ground engineering. Founded in 1934, GeoDelft is one of the world's oldest geotechnical institutes. GeoDelft is initiator of the Delft Cluster Research Partnership, with the Delft University of Technology as a prominent member. Martin van Staveren graduated in 1987 in engineering geology at the Delft University of Technology. He has a large experience in geotechnical engineering, including a lot of assignments in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East for a variety of clients. He is particularly interested in the application of risk management in geotechnical engineering, in order to save costs and time as well as to optimise safety and quality. He wrote some 30 publications on geotechnical site investigations and risk management, as well as chapters for the books The Westerschelde Tunnel - Approaching Limits (2004) and Subsoil - Guideline to Ground Investigations (2006, in Dutch). In 2001, Martin van Staveren obtained an MBA degree from the University of Bradford, UK. Together with his management position at GeoDelft, this raised his interest in innovation and change management in today's globalizing construction industry. His essay Willingness to see, be and change was nominated for the Dutch Management Essay of the Year 2005 and published in the book Change Management- Current Visions on Management (2005, in Dutch). Worldwide, Martin van Staveren provides lectures, courses, seminars and presentations about the combination of ground-related risk management, geotechnique and site investigations. The presentation is systematic and thorough, clearly organized around the "GeoQ risk management process," which includes six information processing steps successively embed in six project phase (see the TOC). What distinguishes this book is that it is not a mathematical treatise on risk theory (of which there are hundreds and hundreds), but a practical and well written "story" packed full of important concepts and understanding, both technical and social-psychological, with illuminating graphics. If you are looking for a "thread" for an optimal management of risk, you should buy this book

I have used the book as practicing engineer, especially on projects where risk management appears to become one of the biggest and very confusing challenge due to the many different stakeholders with their conflicting interests. Since any internationally accepted uniform guidelines in this context as reference are missing, managing risk appears to become a thorn in the side of engineers. With his book, the author manages in a very clear and integer way to take this "displeasure". With the GeoQ concept, the core piece of his book, the reader learns how foreseeable ground risks can be managed in an effective and efficient way and how to combine the "hard", easily quantifiable aspects with the "soft" risk perception components and how to integrate them into risk management. Especially useful are the lively flowcharts, which are kept general enough to be widely applicable, but at the same time specific enough to give a clear red thread to follow. Numerous practical examples allow the reader furthermore to see the introduced concepts put into practice.
This book is up-to-date and has proven valuable to me and my work.

About the Author
Eric Tupper is a Fellow and Honorary Vice-President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), UK. His long career in naval architecture has included ship design, hydrodynamic and structural research, and ship production.

Good introduction into Naval Architecture

Naval Architecture is a big topic and it is easy to get lost in a sea of books that promise much but end up being filled with anecdotes and tales of the sea. Tupper's work is well structured, informative and immediately useful as an overview.

The book provides enough back ground information to understand the principles before the onset of formulas and mathematics.

Perhaps the only small weakness is the treatment of fluid dynamics didn't develop as well as other concepts.

Overall the book is very useful and sits beside my desk so that I can refer to it frequently - and after all isn't that the best recomendation for an introductory work. Thanks Eric.

Excellent Resource

This work provides a qualitative approach to naval architecture, and is best coupled with "Introduction to Naval Architecture" (Gillmer and Johnson, Naval Institute Press). All information is well-presented, detailed, and organized. Although a mathematical interpretation of naval architecture is lacking within this resource, such information is adequately replaced by vivid description and the unique viewpoint of E.C. Tupper. This work is highly recommended for those individuals seeking a basic, non-mathematic approach to ship design; otherwise, the purchase of the Gillmer and Johnson reference is also necessary.

Please note: This is my opinion as a high school Senior completing an independent research project within the field of naval architecture.

This is definitely my go-to book for understanding the general principles of naval architecture. The book is well-written and easy to understand. While very technical, it also very accessable. I think it should be a requirement for anyone in the field.

It's full of good information about the elements that really matter to your campaign and breaks it down based on the desired outcome. So whether your looking to implement a branding campaign, generate leads, sell product or just drive traffic, the tactics are there as well as a description of which engines to use for each type of campaign by industry.

Anyway, it's a good book so I say if you're in that market then you should definitely buy it. Even if you think you're too smart to learn anything new about seo or ppc, trust me, nobody's that smart.

- Covers the broad spectrum of topics related tto search marketing. Includes terms, vendors, technology, fraud issues, metrics, and glossary. Mostly focused on paid search strategy, terms and tactics.

- Brings you up to the level of strategy and down to the level of tactical implementation of pay for performance tactics.

- If I were starting a position in Search enginge marketing, this would be the book to read. It's like sitting down with an expert teaching me the job of search engine marketing. Great for newbies or executives to get a comprehensive overview.

- If you need to "speak the language" of search engine marketing and be conversant in strategies and tactics, this is the book for you.

CONS

- Would love to see more `insider' tips and case studies. For that, go to MarketingSherpa.com.

- Could be organized better. Didn't flow for me.

- Good overview, but not a lot of information about natural search engine optimization.

concise about branding and bidding for search terms

This book might be compared to a recent one by Moran and Hunt, "Search Engine Marketing". Colborn's text is a little more concise. He aims it at a marketing reader, whereas the other book was also directed to someone who knew HTML. Colborn skips any discussion of how to write actual HTML pages in a way suited for search engines to rank well. Instead, he talks more on branding your site and isolating useful words and phrases associated with it, that users might ask a search engine about.

There is also a quick runthrough of bidding strategies on various search engines. Well, realistically, only Google and Yahoo matter. The bidding is for those words and phrases that you defined in your branding.

Excellent book, seems like this author is an authority in neuromuscular world. I purchased this book in neurophs fellowship and still learning from its cases. Recommended dose: Each day 2 cases atleast not more than this to avoid EMG withdrawl CRDs....!
