About the Author
Christopher "Kit" Cuttle is currently Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the University of Auckland. From 1957 he worked as a specialist architectural lighting designer and advisor, and since 1976 he has been lecturing on the subject in New Zealand, the UK and the US. He holds qualifications in illumination, electrical engineering and architecture, and has published 100 papers and articles on lighting.

The result of their effort is an original investment methodology called CROCI (Cash Return on Capital Invested), best described as a variation of the economic profit model. For over a decade now, Costantinis group at Deutsche Bank has been using this valuation tool every time it has had to take a view on the pricing of an equity asset, be it a market, a sector or an individual sharein other words, every single working day, since it is this groups job to advise institutional investors on equity valuation. Costantini describes in detail, accompanied by concrete examples in the form of charts and graphs, the precise investment results of the actual implementation of the CROCI approach in the global equity markets since 1996. Readers will enjoy taking this journey with Costantini to see how and why the model was developed, assess the results of ten years of actual implementation and measure the successes of using this model in stock picking and portfolio construction. This book will also make it easy for them to see how the CROCI approach can be used successfully by others now and in the future.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part is a review and discussion of the fundamentals of investment analysis. The second part is dedicated to the construction of economic data, with the sole objective of calculating an economically meaningful asset multiple and relative return, the combination of which gives an economic PE ratio, the authors main stock selection tool. While the economic profit model is not exactly new, it is still largely ignored by the investment community. In essence, it does three things: it calculates the real amount of cash, or value created by a business; it compares the market value of an asset to an approximation of its replacement value; and it assumes that the former will converge to the latter through the arbitrage of investors and capital providers. The third part is dedicated to the analysis of economic data, and the last part deals with the actual implementation of the CROCI economic profit model, including real life examples. This final part also discusses how to use the output of the CROCI model with individual stocks, and then with investment portfolios.

About the Author
Pascal Costantini is a Managing Director in Deutsche Bank’s Global Markets Research. He researches and designs systematic equity trading strategies for a multitude of applications, including proprietary trading, structured and derivative products.
Mr. Costantini runs Deutsche Bank’s Global Valuation and CROCI Investment Strategy Group. This thirty-member team focuses on the relative value of the top 700 companies in the world, and designs investment strategies for institutional clients as well as for structured products. Prior to this, he was the Bank’s Global Sector Strategist.

Mr. Costantini's area of professional interest is equity valuation and sector rotation. Together with his London-based team, he has developed the proprietary CROCI (Cash Return on Capital Invested) metric, a model that calculates the level of excess return (“Economic Profits”) generated by a company or industry, and extracts from the market valuation the competitive advantage period expected by investors. He gives numerous lectures on valuation and teaches a post graduate Finance course at the University of Paris Dauphine.

Pascal joined Deutsche Bank in 1995. Prior to this, he worked for S.G. Warburg as Head of German Research. He has degrees from the Institute of Political Sciences, Lyons and from the Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC), Paris.

About the Author
Dave Macdonald has throughout his career been involved in the application of instrumentation and control technology to industrial and chemical processes. As a senior instrument engineer with AECI Ltd he specialised in managing the complete design cycle for process control systems from conceptual design to commissioning. He has also developed and lectured a post-graduate course in Industrial Control Systems. Dave has been closely involved in hazard studies for new chemical plants and in the implementation of safety instrumented systems. His expertise ranging from field instrumentation to software quality assurance is particularly relevant to this subject.. In the past few years Dave has lectured on Safety Instrumentation and related topics to many hundreds of Engineers and Technicians in Ireland, Canada the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Good guide

Good book for those designing equipment. The one thing to note is that this is definitely written from a European perspective and mostly references EU standards (IEC & such)with limited US standards. I wish there had been more regarding US standards including NFPA79, ANSI B11 and UL.

About the Author
Frank Bannister is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at Trinity College, Dublin. After graduating from university, he joined the Irish civil service and worked in operations research and economic policy for three years prior to joining Price Waterhouse as a management consultant in 1978. Over the following sixteen years to 1994, he worked with Price Waterhouse on a wide range of information systems assignments in Ireland, the U.K. and Europe in both the public and private sectors, specialising in financial modelling, system design & development and in system specification & selection. He remained a Consulting Associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting until their take-over by IBM in January 2003. In 1994 he moved to Trinity College where he is currently Director of Studies for the Management Science and Information Systems (MSISS) programme. His currently teaching responsibilities include strategic information systems and decision making and modelling. His research interests are in IT value and evaluation, IT acquisition as well as in e-government and e-democracy. Frank has written many articles on information technology and systems and has lectured extensively on these and related topics in Ireland and the UK.

GNU/ARM Jump Start

This is an excellent book. I bought it sight-unseen and have been very pleased. The book takes you step-by-step through bringup of an inexpensive ARM7 evaluation board, first using assembly and then using C language with the Newlib embedded C library. The freely available GNU tool chain is used, so you can get up and running without investing in big-ticket commercial development tools.
The book is based on the Atmel EB40 evaluation board. The pricing sweet spot no longer favors this board, so I bought the EB40A instead. I had to figure out differences in the memory map, PIO addresses for the LEDs, and USART clock enable, but this was straightforward after Google searches for the EB40A.
I highly recommend this book. The technical content is accurate, and it is well-written. It appears to be written by an embedded developer, for embedded developers. Other embedded books I have read recently seem organized around marketing objectives, and are over generalized. Those books are interesting but not very useful in the practical sense.
Edwards' book is useful in the practical sense. I hope he continues to write. I'm ready with my credit card when his next book is published.

Great book, excellent depth and clarity.. voice of experience

This book was a speculative purchase, but it turns out to have been the best of the books I've bought in my search for ground up experience with ARM architecture embedded systems.. The level of the detail is just right, covering one of the most approachable ARM devices available and tackling the GNU compiler setup in just the depth I needed to get me going. My only issues are that the book could do with updating a little, this is going to be an unending task for the author due to the huge popularity of the ARM architecture and the huge number of vendors implementign variations of it.. I wanted an Intel/Marvell XScale PXA270 tutorial and this is as close as I think I'll get... a great buy.

About the Author
Christopher Higman graduated in 1966 from the University of Oxford and received his M.Sc. from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His first contact with gasification was commissioning a producer gas plant in South Africa in 1968. He jopined Lurgi in 1975 and where he spent the next 27 years, mostly involved with gasification and related technologies. He has been responsible for design, project management and start up of a number of ammonia and methanol plants based on the gasification of heavy residues. Other projects for which he was responsible include the gas production units at both the Bintulu and Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids plants and the IGCC/hydrogen production facility at Shell’s Pernis, Netherlands refinery. Before taking up a corporate management position in 1997, he was Head of Gas Technology at Lurgi Öl·Gas·Chemie GmbH.
He is the author of various papers on gasification technology and is a contributor to “Ullmann’s Encyclopaedia of Industrial Chemistry”. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Oxford. He has a number of patents in the field.
At present Mr. Higman is researching into aspects of soot management in heavy oil gasification plants at the Engler-Bunte-Institute at the University of Karlsruhe.

a book that EVERY doc and health lawyer should own!

Liang's book is the first comprehensive AND comprehensible book on the health care system out there! As a physician who went to medical school decades ago, i never realized how much would change in the practice environment. No one has been able to give a thorough review of all the topics that we need to know now; not my specialty society, certainly not the AMA, and not my state med society. But this book does; it has everything from a great overview of the law, the standard stuff (e.g., med mal, informed consent) AND gives clear and complete explanations of the huge and legalese laden areas of fraud and abuse, antitrust, etc. I found the material on physician contracting really helpful in understanding what I should look for in my contracts. And the stuff on death and dying (e.g., advanced directives) was very helpful for my patients (I copied it for them). I heard of this book from the general counsel's office at our hospital and she uses it a lot too. I tell all the med students and residents who rotate with me about this book. About the Author
Dr. Alan Wall worked for 14years as a deck officer on oil tankers with Mobil Shipping Company before completing a PhD in Operational Research at Lancaster University. He then joined Liverpool John Moores University as a nautical lecturer and is now Subject Head with responsibility for marine professional training at LJMU. For 20 years, he has been extensively involved in most aspects of the training and education of seafarers including the provision and training of seafarers using of marine bridge simulators and ship radar equipment. His research and consultancy has involved the use of marine radar and operational research.

After 10 years at sea, Alan Bole qualified as Extra Master Mariner. In 1965, he was appointed Lecturer in Charge of the Radar School at the Liverpool Regional College of Technology. In 1973, Alan was appointed Principal Lecturer in Radar Simulation at the now Liverpool Polytechnic, and in 1979 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute. Since his retirement in 1988, Alan has been focussing on consultancies pertaining to Radar, Navigation and Simulation Worldwide. He also supervises degrees to PhD level through Liverpool John Moore’s University. He is a Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster and Examiner to all levels including ‘Ocean’, and a Co-author of a number of nautical books and publications.

Few Alternatives

Because there are very few books out there about industrial safety / machinery safety, I'd love to say this is a great book.
It is a useful overview. There are few if any alternatives.

Might now be a bit dated, with the changes to the european Machinery Directive and newer standards like EN ISO 13849.

Some of the content looked to be previously delivered in a "workshop".
(References to the workshop were left in, which I feel casual editing should have caught)

Some of the content appeared to be re-cycled safety equipment manufacturer's information. Bit of a hodge podge.
Useful, but you could get it for free from the original source.

I would have liked to see the case studies developed at the beginning, and worked through to the end.
(ie description, risk assessment, safety design, validation)

For the american market, dependent as it is on liability cases, it might have been interesting to see a summary of case law.
Some actual accident investigations from the european end might have been useful.

Useful info about field instruments

Chapter 7 - Safety in the field instruments and devices is quite good-written including a couple of practical tips. However, the parts about hazard assessment (FAR) etc. seem to be unnecessary have no connection to the rest of the book.
