About the Author
Richard Butler is a geographer (Nottingham and Glasgow Universities), and taught for thirty years at the University of Western Ontario (Canada) and then at the University of Surrey. He has published eighteen books on tourism and over a hundred journal articles and chapters. His main areas of research are tourism destination development, and the sustainability of tourism. He is a former President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies.

After a thorough introduction to the subject, ideas are developed so as to ensure that new knowledge is built on firm foundations, and with emphasis on the areas that have proved the most difficult. In keeping with this approach, new terms are never used without being properly introduced and the main terms used in specifications and catalogues are described and typical values quoted. Furthermore, when dealing with equipment such as cleavers, splicers, OTDRs etc., a representative example of each type is used, thus concentrating on the principles involved which can then be transferred to another model as appropriate. At the end of each chapter there are multiple-choice questions, the answers to which are at the back of the book and where calculations are involved, a fully worked answer will be provided. There is a useful glossary included at the end of the book.

Good, not Great, Guide to Fiber Optics

I recently purchased this book, "Fiber Optic Reference Guide" by Goff and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht. I knew nothing about fiber optics and had to get up to speed in a very tight time frame. This was my second favorite of the three, as it did a very good job of providing a basic explanation of the technology behind and implementation of fiber optics. This book was not bad in any way, there were merely some areas where Goff's book (which was the most useful of the three) were more up to date and the illustrations were more clear. Also, it did seem as if a few items within the book were a little dated.

Good starter book

I'm an engineer becoming familiar with fiberoptics. This book is very oriented towards the non-engineer. Much space is devoted to explanation of terms dB, and basic laws of physics.
The issue of multimode vs single mode is handled too cavalierly. The reader is left faced with an undesirable trait of fibers without sufficient explanation of the eigen values or transmission theory. This is good starter book only.

Excellent Intuitive Approach

Electromagnetics texts almost always get so bogged down in complicated mathematics right from the start, that the reader quickly loses all intuitive feel for the subject matter and any real understanding for what's going on.
This book is different!! Finally, somebody has written a book which explains electromagnets from electrostatics to antennas to waveguides in a way that almost anybody can understand. After all the graduate level electromagnetics courses I took learning about TM modes and sperical Bessel functions, I still couldn't claim that I understood much about electomagnetics - until I read this book. Suddenly all kinds of puzzle pieces are fitting together. I only wish I had been able to read it before I ever took any of those classes. I certainly would have had a much better understanding of and appreciation for what I was learning.
I would recommend this book for any electrical engineer or technician, as well as any non-electrical engineer who wants to understand the basics of electromagnetics. If I was an emags professor, I would definitely make this required reading before I ever put a piece of chalk to the board!
Bravo, Mr. Schmitt! Your matter-of-fact writing style and useful every-day analogies have given me a much better understanding of this otherwise enigmatic subject.

An accessible treatment of a challanging subject

I'm a Systems Engineer for a major test and measurement equipment manufacturer and have an MS in Electrical Engineering. Since my job responsibilities have begun to move into the area of wireless, I have been looking for a "intro/refresher" on electromagnetics. One of the problems I've had is that books on this subject are either too math-intensive (filled with triple integrals, etc.), not technical enough, or pure theory (with no hints as to how I might actually USE this information)
This book, on the other hand, strikes a rare balance between these extremes. It's rigorous enough technically, but also does something very few books do -- it explains the WHY and the HOW as well. There is a lot of practical advice on how to apply the material in this book as well.
This book has been very useful to me both as background knowledge as well as in solving some very real problems (e.g. in antenna design/analysis).
I buy well over 50 technical books a year, and this is by far one of (if not the) best. Highly recommended.

I Highly Recommend ThisBook

This book helped me gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for electromagnetic (EM) theory. The book not only answered many of my questions on the subject, but also helped me sort out and solidify my existing knowledge on EM. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially students like myself desiring a real grasp on the subject.
The book does a great job of explaining why high frequency circuits behave so differently than low frequency circuits. I now also have a much better conceptual understanding of magnetism, reactive components, parasitic effects, transmission lines, diffraction, and radiation. I was pleased the author included the Relativity and Quantum Physics chapter, since it helped refresh my memory on those subjects.
Many of my fellow classmates majoring in electrical engineering are totally clueless when it comes to understanding the theory behind EM. To many of them an inductor is nothing more than a little circuit symbol and equation. To many of them permittivity and permeability are just numbers. To many of them EM waves arise solely because of a fancy vector identity applied to Maxwell's Equations. I truly hope they find this book.

A compassionate view of the future.

I liked this book because it allows the readers to map all aspects of the future - especially business. The basic thesis states that compassion and empathy will be required to do business in the next millennium. Although this may seem contrary to the current "Greed is Good" school of thought, the authors show that paradigm shifts will force businesses to change their focus. A very practical book as well.

great introduction to EEG

This is a short and easy to read book, covering the basics of EEG.
It is written in a clear and concise way, with emphasis on what one should know of the fundamentals.
I had previously read larger books, but tend to loose track of the basics as I kept on reading them. Not so with this book.
The mini-atlas is useful and suprisingly quite informative.
Recently I attended an EEG workshop and could quite accurately identify most of the EEGs put up.
Overall, definitely recommended!

Perfect introduction

I bought this book in anticipation for an EEG rotation during my PGY-2 year of Neurology training. I wanted a book that reviewed basic concepts with only essential information. I also wanted a book with plenty of pictures. This book fulfilled those criteria perfectly.

Unlike some other EEG books I have come across, this book has plenty of actual EEG images in its mini-atlas. It is hard for the beginner to tell the difference between a Mu rhythm or a PDR just from reading a description. The mini-atlas has examples of normal EEGs, variants, artifacts and abnormal EEGs.

Another strong point is the writing style. Reading this book, you feel as though you have an experienced attending showing you the EEG; you can imagine yourself looking on as he or she teaches.

Finally, I recommend this book because I used it and, on my first day on EEG, the attending told me he was impressed by how much I knew. This book is short and can be read in one-two days. It's worth a couple days of reading to get a compliment from an attending on your first day.

I have since looked at some other good EEG and neurophysiology books, however I haven't found one with such a personable writing style or large atlas. I recommend this as the first book to be read for an EEG rotation.

Primer of EEG for the non-neurologist

I am an internist but always wanted to know the usefulness, history of and physiology of EEG. It is helpful when reading the reports on EEGs of my patients. This book is well written and well organized. It is ideal for residents and fellows as an introduction to the field but very useful for someone like me. I am not sure I would want anything too much more involved.

Interesting cross-disciplinary book not just for architects

This is a very interesting book on the use of algorithms to come up with interesting solutions to architectural design problems. It is a sort of cross between artificial intelligence, computer science, computer graphics, and, of course, architecture that uses the language of algorithm implementation to get its point across of all of these disciplines intersecting. The first three chapters are introductory in nature and focus on the philosophy of combining the various disciplines. The fourth chapter is where the author gets down to business and begins to discuss specific algorithms. Boolean operations, stochastic search, fractals, cellular automata, and morphing are all shown in algorithmic form and discussed within the context of solving architectural design problems. For each algorithm the author gives code, explanations, and examples. Chapters five and six provide illustrations of types of architectural design that use algorithms. Chapter five presents three projects: a parasite structure, a morphed high-rise, and a Boolean concert hall. Chapter six shows how intricate structures can emerge from simple algorithms. Three projects are presented in this chapter too: a repetitive pattern for a house of worship, a stochastic-based residential high-rise, and a library. Chapter seven acts as a kind of summary of ideas presented in the book. I am involved in computer graphic programming, not architecture, and I still found lots of ideas in this very fascinating and well-illustrated book. This would be interesting reading for people involved in the design of virtual worlds too.

Including MEL scripts

This book starts by explaining the nature of algorithmic architecture. Next to the interesting theories and viewpoints it gives short MEL-scripts. These scripts are the code behind the amazing algorithmic shapes and spaces. I found these MEL scripts very useful and by studying the scripts this book will give you the key to create your own algorithm. I was able to make simple scripts myself, but these nice examples really improved my skills and gave me new ideas of how to use MEL (within maya).

This is a good book for architecture students. There you 'll find an introduction to the use of scripting in architectural design, algorithms, students projects and even MEL code.
Nevertheless I think the first half of the book is forgettable, there the author tries to come up with a BIG theory for design, and falls short.

Terrific, unique work

I have really come to love this book over time. First off, the author clearly explains the basic workings of all corrosion mechanisms in detail with illustrative diagrams. I have read the classic Fontana books, Schweiter's works, and hundreds of articles on corrosion of metals, polymers, coatings etc but this book takes it to another level. I have achieved an enhanced understanding of all forms of corrosion including discovery of many finicky details heretofore unbeknownst to me. For example, regarding galvanic corrosion of zinc and iron, "at temperatures above 60 C (140F), the zinc becomes cathodic and the iron becomes anodic (p. 124)." In the rusting of iron, "if Fe(Oh)2 [ferrous hydroxide] is formed on the surface of a metal very rapidly, the corrosion is prevented (a passive film)", but "the corrosion rate is very high if the ferrous iron is oxidized to ferric oxide rapidly (p. 123)." Did you know that replacing a new pipe next to the old pipe makes the new pipe anodic, meaning the new pipe will corrode (p. 131)? Also, regarding galvanic corrosion, "titanium has a tendency to polarize cathodically in seawater. Any less resistant metal attached to titanium will not undergo corrosion as would be expected because of the cathodic polarization of titanium."

In the "Types of Corrosion" chapter, the author goes into great detail to explain each mechanism in detail. On "factors affecting crevice corrosion", the author provides the following detailed list (p.140):

Have you ever seen such a thorough breakdown of crevice corrosion factors?? This is great, and it is typical of Mr. Ahmad's comprehensive approach throughout the book. Check out p.153 in the preview for an unparalled view of the anatomy of a pit. He then closes the section with an 11-point checklist for the prevention of pitting corrosion (p.162). After 150 pages of detailed insights, diagrams, and examples, this in-depth chapter finally comes to a close.

In the "Corrosion Prevention by Design" chapter, illustrations are abound on every page. If you can preview the chapter, you'll see that the author was truly intent on making his readers understand these concepts fully.

In addition, this is a great all-in-one quantitative book expecially as regard corrosion kinetics. Mr. Ahmad explains the derivations clearly and I was left with an understanding of the equations, how to use them, and the assumptions under which they are valid.

A whole chapter on atmospheric corrosion is provided, illuminating the fact that "If the atmosphere is clear and uncontaminated, corrosion is negligible at a RH as high as 99%. However, in the presence of contaminants, corrosion begins to increase around 80% RH...steel can corrode even at 35% RH in the marine environment. At a RH of 55%, a surface film of 15 molecules thick is formed on mild steel, which increases to a 90 molecular layer as the RH increases to 100%, causing an acceleration of the corrosion process (p.554)."

It goes on and on. On top of that, this jewel is available at a really reasonable price. With a publication date of 2006, this is gotta be my best pick for a corrosion textbook for the serious professional. For a design engineer/failure analyst such as myself, this great work is a dream come true. Thank you sincerely, Mr. Ahmad.
