About the Author
Dr. Jones is co-author of Engineering Materials 1 and 2 and lead author for the 3rd and 4th editions. He was the founder editor of Elsevier's journal Engineering Failure Analysis, and founder chair of Elsevier's International Conference on Engineering Failure Analysis series. His research interests are in materials engineering, and along with serving as President of Christ's College at the University of Cambridge he now works internationally advising major companies and legal firms on failures of large steel structures.

Worst Engineering Book I've Encountered

I am a senior engineering student, and this is by far the worst textbook I've encountered thus far in my collegiate career. The 'examples' are actually the problems at the end of the chapter. There are really no worked examples in this text. The text frequently italicizes important words, then fails to provide an adequate definition of the term if any definition is provided at all . The chapters are quite concise, which is helpful once you have already learned the material and are going to do a review for an exam. This same characteristic makes the initial learning of the material a real challenge. My classmates have provided the same feedback to the professor regarding this text. Everyone, including the professor, dislikes this text. It is the first time this professor has taught this course, and he has already vowed to change texts for next semester. If you have this class coming up and this is the text used, I highly suggest you ask the professor to choose a different text.

Needs more examples.

The book has a lot of helpful material but is poor in examples. The problem set in each chapter is harder than the average problem set in a book and usually more information from another source is needed to find out the solution.
