Chapter 1 has been reorganized and updated, and most of it is in smaller print in order not to increase the size of the book. Chapters 2 and 5 have been similarly altered and combined into one chapter, Chapter 2, again in order to save pages. 800 and 350 entries have been added to Chapter 3 (25% increase) and Chapter 4 (44% increase) respectively, and 400 entries (310% increase) were added to Chapter 5 (Chapter 6 in the third edition) making a total of 5700 entries, all resulting in an increase from 319 to 529 pages, i.e. ca 35%. This considerably expanded and revised fourth edition includes much new material dealing with modern reagents for natural products chemistry, protein biochemistry and molecular biology. It also includes many individual compounds not previously covered, and more information is given for most entries, including melting and boiling points, molecular weights, refractive indexes, densities and CAS registry numbers, as well as likely contaminants and storage conditions in appropriate cases.

Now in its fifth edition, Purification of Laboratory Chemicals continues to provide laboratory scientists with a manual for purifying and increasing the purity of modern commercially available chemical substances.
The authors have written and revised six chapters that describe the aspects of purification and properties of chemical substances. In addition to detailing physical methods and procedures such as crystallization, distillation, chromatography, etc., the authors also address chemical methods and procedures used in purification including conversion to specific derivatives or complexes and regeneration of the original material in a much-purified form.
The book also outlines recent developments in synthesis (e.g. combinatorial chemistry, solid support chemistry, fluorous chemistry) and the corresponding purification procedures that will provide many of the commercially supplied chemical substances in years to come. Additionally, interesting perspective about the future of purification is provided by the authors, based on their years of experience.
The bulk of the book contains purification procedures (taken from the literature) of individual entries for commercially available organic compounds, inorganic and metal-organic compounds, and biochemical and related compounds respectively. The entries are accessible in alphabetical order, and in most cases synonymous names and/or abbreviations are included as well as the CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) Registry Numbers. The physical properties have been entered, such as the molecular weight, melting and boiling points, and specific rotations if substances are optically active. Rapid purification procedures for common solvents have also been included after the respective extensive procedures.
New to this edition, the ionisation constants in the form of pK have been entered for ionisable compounds. These are followed by procedures, used to purify the substances, in most cases to analytical purity. An index of CAS Registry Numbers with the respective page numbers of the entries has been added as well, making it easy to locate any substance irrespective of which chapter it is in, and also rapidly telling the reader whether there is a purification procedure for that substance in this book.

I am very satisfied with this book

It is difficult to make any statements of validity from my point of view as I am not trained in, nor educated in the field of chemistry except through self teaching. This wealth of information can only be the result of a river of sweat churned out by chemists living throughout the ages of which the authors drank heartily who then through much trial and sweat of their own gave it to us as honey. This book holds overwhelming amounts of it's subject matter and the methods to purify through straight forward descriptive techniques. I am very satisfied with this book!

Great for the Organic Chemist

Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist. It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or the drying/purification of solvents. The protocols for purification are usually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and can be carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to giving the pure, pure substance.
Excellent for the research organic chemistry graduate student or the pharmaceutical industrial research chemist who likes to start with the purest materials, so as to leave only the investigative variables open to question.
However, in industry, although FedEx-ing new and pure reagents (and disposal of the old questionable ones!) is the easiest and encouraged method for research, it is often found that purification is totally appropriate--in these instances, Purification of Laboratory Chemicals (D.D. Perrin & W.L.F. Armarego) is highly recommended.

Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist

This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section). This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number of common solvents and reagents. I don't know how any chemist can survive without having this on his/her bookshelf!
