A strong knowledge of plasticity is essential for engineers dealing with a wide range of engineering problems, such as those encountered in the forming of metals, the design of pressure vessels, the mechanics of armor penetration, the understanding of fatigue and the economical design of structures.
The book presents not only the basic theory, but also presents readers with detailed examples of the application of plasticity theory to a variety of engineering problems, both structural and non-structural in nature. Several chapters of the book are devoted to the theory and application of the slipline field, which constitutes one of the most highly developed areas of the mathematical theory of plasticity. The elastic/plastic bending of beams, torsion of bars, partially plastic expansion of thick-walled pressure vessels, and the load carrying capacity of beams and framed structures, and plates and shells, are all covered in detail.
